LAS VEGAS STORY REVIEW

found this at: http://www.parasol.com/mail_order/staffpicks/gunclub.asp

Staff pick of the week...
This week... Jim picks The Gun Club

Artist: The Gun Club
Title: The Las Vegas Story [re-issue]
Label: Sympathy FTRI
Format: CD
Price: $13.50

A fiery exorcism of cathartic blues-punk and spectral rock from a group of true post-punk roots-rockers, excommunicated Goths and a lead singer who was President of the official Blondie fanclub of the day? Well, it worked, and worked its bloody, hairy, hooded black magick on me…and still does 20 years later it remains one of The Gun Club's most ambitious and haunting albums, and one of my personal Top Fifty Albums Of All Time! Ringleader Jeffrey Lee Pierce was a sinister gutter shaman, malevolent punk seer, and hopped-up freak, and "The Las Vegas Story" line-up of guitarist Kid Congo Powers (The Cramps, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, etc), bassist Patricia Morrisson (The Bags, Sisters of Mercy, The Damned, etc), and rockabilly drummer Terry Graham were one of the fiercest and frightening guitar bands of the decade. A collection of songs about society's seediest underbellies, the dark alleys of the metropolises, and murderous rural dead ends. And in the tradition of true roots music The Gun Club tackles a couple standards by George and Ira Gershwin ("The Master Plan"), and Pharoah Sanders ("My Man's Gone Now"), but it's the fire and brimstone (and wine and heroin) percolating in tracks like "Walkin' With the Beast" and "My Dreams" that still light bonfires in the pagan heart of man. This re-mastered re-issue features the bonus track "Secret Fires", a beautiful ballad lushed-out with pedal steel, originally available on the original cassette version. Remember cassette tapes? Not available on cassette, sorry. But Sympathy was kind enough to offer updated
re-issues of three classic Gun Club albums on CD and warm and punchy vinyl!

POST XMAS

I am in Northern California post Xmas, visiting my sister and family, The Congo-Powers, for the holidays. I met up with my pal Mark Eitzel in San Francisco, which is always inspiring as good friendships are. Also did an interview with Mojo Magazine for an in depth article on The Gun Club, which is a great thing, especially in light of the re-issues of the ANIMAL Records, releases MIAMI, DEATH PARTY, & LAS VEGAS STORY on Sympathy For The Record Industry http://www.sympathyrecords.com/home.shtml I am so happy that some more attention is given to the legacy of Jeffrey Lee Pierce, cause, besides being my long time best friend and collaborator , he was a major mother fucker of talent that got little recognition. Big seminal influence by many other musicians always, but always overlooked by the bigger press Lucky now that the likes of The White Stripes are singing the praise of the Gun Club that the mainstream press is forced to take a look.

The last blog entry was dated 12/5 and really I haven't written much because I have been in the studio still mixing the Pink Monkey Birds album, which may well be titled "Philosophy and Underwear" . That is going fantastic and am just about done. We are looking at a probable MAY 05 release, so not much more time to wait .

Oh Yeah, Kid&KHAN went and played Russia in early December! Moscow was the anniversary party for B2 club, which was a blast, along with Berlin/Canadian sensation Taylor Savvy on board! As per usual, Irina showed us an amazing time. We went to a party in a train hanger for TIMEOUT Moscow..With a line of about 25 bored young models in tartan schoolgirl uniforms guarding the tracks, a traditional marching band played a song to announce the arrival of the TIME OUT train which plowed right into the party room (on a track,of course) and out came the local luminaries, i am sure actors and musicians and gossip columnists. The Moscow Celine Dion (without the long face) belted out a heart felt ballad and then some english goths in sparkly pants played some pretty usual stuff. Best part was the DJ played the Kid Congo&The Pink Monkey Bird's version of Captain Comatose song, "Mr. Monkey" The following day we took a crazy train to St. Petersburg . The breakfast room in the Hotel played bird calls all thru breakfast. Gorgeous! My kind of music. The show was very fun and can't wait to return.
If I don't blog before, Have a great New Years!.

DECEMBER 5, 2004

The photo is from Kid & Khan "Bad English" tour Oct. 04 at Le Lieu Unique in Rennes, France (pardon me if i misspelt that!)

Hello. so much stuff has gone on since I got off from Tour. Mostly I have been holed-up in the recording studio mixing the Kid Congo and The Pink Monkey Birds album, which, I must say, is quite fab so far. It has taken many twists and turns since the initial recording of the tracks. It's a strange sort of rock we make. Very fun rock. Thoughtful, primal , beautiful and cuckoo too Each member really shines on it. Can't wait to finish and release it. There is a plan to have it out in May 05. Will keep you updated as it progresses.

This week I am going to Russia (Moscow and St. Petersburg ) to further promote the KID&KHAN Bad English album. It is our second time to play there , last time with Julee Cruise, and I had such a beautiful time last trip. I am packing my long underwear and fur bikini!

Last week I did a gig in LA with my friend's Wetback at club Screwball, which was just that! Screwy! It is a party run By Don Bowles (the Germs drummer and bon vivant) with DJ Howie Pyro who have the really sickest most fun record collection. Howie even dragged out a dance record "The Touch Song" that is a psychedelic children's dance number which instructs you to lay on the floor and then get up and start touching everything in sight. We danced to it many years ago in the old days when we were expert trippers. Instant flashback!. It was fun night and Jessica Espelita's birthday. I f you don't know Jessica, she is one of the most amazing musician friends i know. And many agree with this fact. The show was a gas and was cool to see Unkle Dan there. Also my dear friends Carla Bozulitch and Nels Cline were there and provided great hospitality, LOVE THEM! And my personal pick's to click, The Secret Society of The Sonic Six added the glamour to the occasion. It was so much fun , and the people actually were dressed up, much missed these days! A great night to check out if you find yourself in Los Angeles.

I had to high-tail it back to NYC to take care of my Russian Visa which was getting quite close to the wire . Those things get me nervous till they are taken care of. I will miss a show with WETBACK at The Echo on Monday. Too bad, as there was a nice write up in the LA Weekly saying nice stuff about me. But I must go pick up my visa and Then fly to Moscow the next day. I need a doppelganger. But the show will go on and I recommend you go, it will be another great night.

And Happy Birthday to Jack Martin, my bestest friend and collaborator in The Pink Monkey Birds. His avant-jazz band The Dimestore Dance Band just get better every time i see them.
Well, I will report more when I return from Russia. Will take some pics. keep safe, much love KID

REPORT FROM DA ROAD

Hello friends. Well our 2 month European tour is at the halfway point and has been a blast so far. Have been to Ibiza, Portugal, France, and Germany. I know Ibiza is not a country but it hardly seems like Spain at all. A techno island full of drunk brits and germans. I will say i had fun and met cool interesting folks. Hung out for some days on the beach with Khan and Snax, which is a holiday in itself, anyone will tell you... The Shereton in Lisbon wasn't bad either! France was fun and there was a Ramones tribute band in Bordeaux that drove into the club on a motorcycle with a sound system attached to it!...AWESOME!....Paris PULP Club was fashion week, crowd mixed with the regular great girls (Fanny!) who run the place...I think our THEATRICAL leanings was a bit much for some, but we had the girls get onstage and love themselves to our rockin beat. Nante at Le Lieu Unique was tres chic!

In Berlin was so happy to see tons of old friends, Bad Seeds Thomas and Mick and Katy , Die Hauts, Liason Dangueous' Beate, Toby Dammit, Boy From Brazil, Electrocute, Anita Lane, Maria Zastrow, Alexander Hacke, Dominic, Marianne, Marie and Ed Cantu, Uli Schupple, SNAX , Andy and Roberge, Andrea Wunsche (i don't have umalattes on my keyboard.) plus more more more at various gatherings and celebrations of like minded souls....Khan and myself also have been busy recording 8 new tracks for the next onslaught of output for 2005. Everyone loves Baklava!

here are the rest of our dates for the tour.. Come out and have a BALL.

Space is the Place....

Love ya KID

Anti Bush Protest

Today me , Little Annie, Paul Wallfisch and up to 400,000 (reports say) people took to the streets to protest the Bush administration and the arriving republican national convention . My favorite protester signs were "Monkey Go Home" , "George Clinton for President" , and " McGreevy says "No Bush! " Vote Democrat!" I love New York!..Here's a pic of me and Little Annie laughing happy to be there I also liked the sign "Bush is an Idiot!"

RICK JAMES MEMORIES....

I am sad about Rick James, what is life without the Superfreak?......I remember in the late 70's, when I was a Teenage punk working at a record store on Hollywood Blvd. , George Clinton had released an album, Glory HallaStoopid which had a cartoon of Rick James Superfreak body with the head of a Jackass!....well, Rick James and his big bodygaurds came in and took the pile of albums on display and made a scene breaking them all, then paying for them, telling us to "throw this garbage into the trash!".....The crowning glory of the event was that at the same time, a drag queen on rollerskates was having a drug overdose and slumped over in the Jazz section!.. we found she had stuffed some albums under her t-shirt as well!....i don't think Rick James even noticed..he and his people strolled out very satisfied.,,we were estatic! .another day at work on Hollywood Blvd!...I did get to see his "comeback out of jail" tour which was very awesome, The real deal in FUNK!.. with no irony he wore an admiral's jacket and was a bit fatter than before (that happens to the best of us!) and he reminded me of a cross between Michael Jackson and Jeffrey Lee Pierce, both fond of the same look! .But he rock/funked the place upside-down with the Stone City Band, and 2 of the Mary Jane Girls at Trammps in NYC... Will miss Mr James..my favorite line: "She's got incense, wine, and candles, It's such a freaky scene!".

Long Time, No Blog

abstract

Hello . it has been ages since i have written, sorry for the delay so lot's of things have been happening in my music world. I had gone to Los Angeles this last month to play a show with my friend, Cesar Padilla's, band called Wetback. It is a fun rock n roll band of friends including Luis Silva from Brujerdia, and Jack Waterson from my old LA peers Green on Red. So we're 3/5ths Mexican Americans with Chicano sympathizers, not synthesizers..Someone commented that it sounds something like the old LA band The Surf Punks, which is pretty correct in my mind, but only in half Spanish language. Take that any way you wish! For me, it's fun, cutting loose and being the guitar noodler on the side with some pals. I get so wrapped up being thrust into the forefront with The Pink Monkey Birds and Kid&Khan that it's nice to be anonymous and take a back seat, or in this case , a back of the bus seat!..The occasion for the gig was the record release party for Eleni Mandell's new album, Afternoon...It wa a fun night for me because besides being good friends with Eleni, a lot of my old LA pals came to visit Kristian Hoffman, www.kristianhoffman.com ( the great talent from Mumps, Swinging Madisons, Congo Norvell (!), and songwriter for the great late Klaus Nomi), Arthur Brennen, Patty Powers, Danny Frankel, Vudi from American Music Club, Mimi, and my nephews Craig and Adam! Familia!. We played last and late and it was probably a mess, but hey, it was a party!...We also did some recording at the studio formerly owned by the drummer of Steely Dan in "the valley"..tres LA!....the pool was nice.

...Another great thing i did (well, great for me) was to record with Abby Travis , whom i briefly played on tour and did sit ups with Botanica, at her studio for the new recordings of my dear friend i never get to see but admire, Brian Grillo, whom you may know his former band, Extra Fancy. I played some drunken cat sounding guitar on a track called "Luminescent Pain" which i am very happy with, Brian is a great soul singer!.for a white guy!.just kidding!....I look forward to the release and am happy they asked me to play.. that's what i love among long-standing friendships with musicians, that there are people that i just don't question, playing for them but you must really be my friend for that!!

... speaking of release (we like release!) the long awaited Kid&Khan album, "Bad English" is getting released on August 31 on Transolr records. It was mastered by Khan and his brother , Jammin Unit in Berlin and sounds uber-muscular . I am very very very very excited. Tour of Europe in the fall. will keep you posted....

...back here in NYC , Kid Congo and The Pink Monkey Birds are going to start recording our album next week!..I figure we have been playing live for over 4 years in several incarnations, with the only recorded track , "Mr. Monkey". on the Captain Comatose remix album, PICKING UP, on Playhouse records...excuse the long wait,PMB fans, but i am happy that the band was able to actually grow musically out of the spotlight and become it's own true, varied, yet very focused strong sound in the long gestation period in the womb. It's probably not anything people might expect, but by now you probably know i like it that way...luckily many of you seem to like that about me too.....i will blog from the studio from my iBook.....

...some things that made me happy the last month: Weird War gig at Mercury Lounge in NYC.. I used to hang out and even jump onstage from time to time (to play the triangle, a very underrated instrument) with their former band, Make Up , Their show and new album, "If You Can't Beat 'Em, Bite "Em" restored my waning faith in things original and underground . They definitely speak my musical language...

The new Jim Jarmusch film "Coffee and Cigarettes" was good fun, and i was happy to see Bill Rice (whom with i have shared the theatrical stage) and Taylor Meade on the big screen, where they both belong..i have been long been of the belief that "the disenfranchised shall inherit the earth" What other philosophy could possibly keep us going?

THE FUTURE: "Fahrenhieit 9/11...i got tickets for the 25th!

THINGS THAT MADE ME SAD...the death of Ray Charles. amazing contributer to our culture... too bad the publicity was on Regan, that man responsible for ignoring the AIDS epidemic, which took the lives of far too many of my friends and gay men throughout the 1980's..fuck that noise!

THINGS THAT MADE ME MAD: The Bush Administration..no explination needed!

...so this was more of an update than a diary blog.i will try to insert some more story telling next time..
oh yeah, Kid Congo and The Pink Monkey Birds will be playing a live show on June 29th at The Coral Room in NYC. check the Voice or Time Out for locaton ...or write me..thanks, keep safe Kid

Al Gore speech

I usually don't get political with my music website (i am more of the theory that the personal is political) but this speech by Al Gore concurs with my sentiments and outrage with the current US administration... and PLEASE those who can vote in US election...VOTE FOR KERRY > VOTE.AGAINST BUSH!

MORE INDIE TORTURE.

one more timeHey Friends, my computer was broke and in repair, so a bunch of crazy stuff happened and I didn't even get to rant and rave about any of it on my blog page!...just got my computer back today and here i am..In a calmer more cooler voice than it was in the last 2 weeks, i am sad to tell you that the label that was to put out my "SOLO CHOLO" (Broadway Jungle) has ceased to exist, before getting out of the starting gate..There were many problems, both physical and business related that just would not let good guys with cool vision get some great music out to you....It sucks, that is for sure..but that's the way it goes..i always have said that the most humiliating thing in my life is that i must be part of the music industry...Don't get me wrong, the BEST thing in my life is making records and playing live..That fills me with joy and love and chocolate..it's the industry that makes me want to barf...but this is no new news to myself, and probably many of you fringed dwellers either..my other artist friends concure...I don't blame the Broadway Jungle guys, they are on OUR side....I guess i AM ranting on a bit, but not too badly ...PROVE IT! JUST THE FACTS!...a wise man once said....i suppose i will put out SOLO CHOLO myself, limited edition, sell it live and via my website...i DO have a master, artwork, liner notes, and press release..i will let you know....when i know...I KNOW, BUT I DON'T KNOW...a wise woman once said.
....The Pink Monkey Birds did some great shows, as per usual, This month of April..I am so happy to have the best band members..amazing musicians..names: Jack Martin, Jerome O; Brien , Josh Belknap, and new edition Jorge Velasquez..Barry London too, if he ever returns to our fold.. I have always been lucky to work with great musicians, some you heard of, many you haven't, and their talents all supreme....lucky lucky lucky me...
..something that WIll be released is the Kid&Khan album, BAD ENGLISH, in September on Transolar records out of Berlin..should i move to Berlin?...many, and a big part of myself, think i should...
i will write more soon, but wanted to break the news to you about Broadway Jungle..i am sad to report it's demise, but we march FORWARD!....
more sad news: Hubert Selby Jr. died yesterday. I LOVED his books. Last Exit to Brooklyn most notably..I once saw him do a reading in Los Angeles and he read a story he had wrote about Billie Holiday and i was weeping at it's beauty..That's my kind of ART!.....

BERLIN

So i am in Berlin, having a great time, seeing old friends and such. The night i arrived was a record release party for the new Captain Comatose remix album, PICKING UP, on Playhouse records. As you may know, my band, Kid Congo and The Pink Monkey Birds are included doing a live band version of their song, "Mr. Monkey" ...So i was immediatly thrown onstage as guest and it was like being home again with Snax and Khan. I am happy that the track made it onto the vinyl version. The following night was the Kid&Khan show at Big Eden, a great tacky 70's disco. It was for the Pale Music night, put on by Steve Morell, who has been most accommodating It was also my birthday party, so lots of friends and revelers showed up to help me celebrate. They had a cake with sparklers on it and everything. Andrea gave me the coolest shirt..

There certainly are a lot of yanks here in Berlin i must say( not Andrea!), infiltrating the nightclub scene. Anyways, I was very happy and of, course, playing with Khan just gets more fun and funny each time. The next day my friend Christian Jedriko (did i spell that right?) showed up in Berlin and we went to see The Stranglers at The Knaak club. We got into the sweat-pit for the last few songs and encores, which was the greatest hit part anyway, so that was fun The bassist still looked good shirtless, and great sound. I was never a big stranglers fan, but i had a nice wave of nostalgia wisk thu my bones. We met up with Maria (DJ Disastrow) , my longest friend in Berlin, for drinks until late in the evening....

The following night, last night, we went to see the premiere of Bruce La Bruce's new film, The Raspberry Reich, which was really great. The editing and subject matter and acting all were excellent, and the music!...Oh man!...3 tracks by Khan and Kid&Khan in great porno scenes, the way it is meant to be!..but i REALLY DID think the movie was fun and fantastic, Congrats to Bruce!

ok, thats all for now as i am in a cafe and my internet time is running low.....just a note to let you know i still love Berlin and all is well thu another birthday.....more soon...keep safe kiddies... love, Kid

a bit of blah blah

another attempt to write something

Hi..i just decided to try to put an online diary on the site to keep people informed , or try to keep myself into informing people, my updates are so sporadic !...i actually have got the idea from looking at my friend/ co-conspirators Khan and Julee Cruise's websites and that's why i put a pic up the other day. I like working with people that inspire me... did they inspire me, or am i just lazy and i took their idea?...i guess a lot of people put diaries on their websites..anyways, here i am writing a bit of blah blah..

Things have been good, and my album, "Solo Cholo" is getting on it's way out hopefully in the next month. these things always take longer than expected. Broadway Jungle is the label and they are doing their best to make sure all is cool and right..and sometimes it takes time....i'll let you know what's up as it happens.
I had a great time on tour in Jan 04, in Greece and Italy with Khan and Julee, our shows were fun, dramatic, silly, and musically gorgeous, we really "jelled" it seemed like on all levels..i hope those of you that were there enjoyed it as much as i did...

Here in NYC Kid Congo & The Pink Monkey Birds did a show at a club called The Hook, in Redhook,Brooklyn..it was the most awesome club i've been to in NYC in yonks!...the promoters and staff were amazing and nice, and the club itself was a joy..3 big rooms, great sound and stage flanked by white collums and great big crowd..it was freezing out that night and i thought for sure nobody would show up. Luckily, the Hook did their press and also the very wonderful Mr. Airplane Man from Boston were on the bill as well...Jarvis from Pulp was in the audience even!..he has been to see The Pink Monkey Birds a few times, why doesn't he every come say hello?...also Little Annie was on hand to sing with us on "The Weather, The War.." which is a killer i can't wait to record!...Check out her album Little Annie and the Legally Jammin' on Itallic records...its with Jedriko (Studio Apt from Dusseldorf) and Khan..i think i shake a maraca on it somewhere..There's a funny story, once some many years ago me< Jack Martin and Howie Pyro were the backing band for Little Annie for a gig in NYC...Annie, (and me and Jack) were terribly sick and crabby..i mean REALLY sick...Our show started and thru the first few songs there was a couple right in front of the stage making out non stop..as you may know, Annie's songs are very story telling format and require attention. anyways this terrible couple just kept making out and ignoring the stage, even tho they were blocking the view of center stage.so Little Annie had enough and stood singing right in their faces and they still then wouldn't release the liplock!...so Annie stops the song and says into the mic "Hey!..Now do i come into your bedroom and sing while you're fucking??!!" ..the audience cracked up and cheered wildly...the couple skulked off into a corner and resumed their lovers dance of degredation...we left the show and got well...those were the days!

well it's late and i better get some rest...i just am gonna blah blah on on this blog to get into the habit of writing and let you in on my brain from time to time...hope all is good...oh yeah, NYC people, Kid Congo & The Pink Monkey Birds are playing a gig on March 11 at The Coral Room...email me at Kidcongo@mac.com if you want to be on the mailing list and get the details....have a good sleep my friends....more soon....Kid
